ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the merger of MCI Communications Corp. with Verizon Communications Inc. The world watched with fascination last year an eight-month struggle to acquire MCI which unfolded between industry heavyweight Verizon and upstart Qwest Communications International Inc. The deal also included Wall Street's first big taste of shareholder activism from the hedge fund community. Verizon played a crafty game, structuring its counteroffers with innovative twists and ultimately capturing the prize without engaging in a costly bidding war.
