The article focuses on the acquisition of SunGard Data Systems Inc., the financial services technology company, by seven-member private equity consortium organized by Silver Lake Partners LLC in 2005. One of the founders of the consortium Glenn Hutchins convinced Providence Equity Partners and the private equity arm of Goldman Sachs to join Silver Lake, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Bain Capital, the Blackstone Group and Texas Pacific Group. Hutchins says that although bringing seven private equity firms together to do a deal this size was a challenge, it wasn't the cat-herding exercise it might have been.
