ABSTRACT
The article presents information about the merger and acquisition activity among companies operating in the Barnett Shale natural gas region in Texas. Independent exploration and production companies are the owners of the most rich tracts of land in the region. Devon Energy Corp. is the largest player in the region. The companies in the region desperately need cash. The local companies do not have adequate capital required to extract the gas from the ground, and have, therefore, been forced to partner with some of the majors.
