ABSTRACT
This article reports that retailers are redefining their frozen dispensed beverage programs with the addition of milkshakes to their product lines. Milkshakes--both self-serve and made-to-order--are appearing in convenience stores lately, and chains that are shaking things up say they are satisfied with the results so far. Currently, 250 of Pennsylvania-based Sheetz Convenience Stores's 300-plus stores are offering f'REAL! milkshakes in four flavors: chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and chocolate malt. The milkshakes, manufactured by f'REAL! Foods in Orinda, California, come in 16-ounce pre-proportioned frozen cups. Quik Trip Corp., a 445-store chain based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was the first to launch the milkshakes in the summer of 2003. White Hen Pantry Inc., headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, takes a little different spin on milkshakes with its proprietary line, Polar Blends, which is carried in all 216 stores. The company has even pulled popular energy drinks into the mix with offerings like Red Bull Rush and Monster Mango, according to advertising manager Ari Goldsmith.
