Heard around the West

The articles present information on developments related to animals in the West. Republican Senate, Charles E. Grassley found that hunters used to book safaris, bag a trophy animal and then contribute the stuffed animal to a museum and in return get a tax break. According to the newspaper "Washington Post," the Wyobraska Wildlife Museum in Gering, Nevada has accepted hundreds of donated trophy mounts. However, most of them gather dust in trailers behind the museum before they got sold at taxidermy auctions. California's successful strategy of combating medflies includes millions of sterile male medflies which are released in a 10-mile radius where the bugs have been discovered. This is followed by the distribution of a bacteria bait called Naturalyte that kills medflies but doesn't harm people. As a result of this, the bugs either fail to reproduce or die from the poison. The magazine "New Scientist" has presented a study which has found that Canadian grizzly bears do not cross the Canada's major eastwest road through the rocky mountains and other two ranges.
