ABSTRACT
The article presents a study on the effect of varicella-zoster virus on the burden of illness caused by herpes zoster and the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia in the U.S. Persons 60 years old and below with history of varicella or had lived in the U.S. for 30 years participated in the study. Results of the study showed that 315 participants in the vaccine group and 642 in the placebo group acquired herpes zoster. Incidence of herpes zoster and burden of illness were lower in the vaccine group.
