TV stations rely on research, marketing tactics to improve quality of news shows

The article reports that the ratings of local television news shows, marketing and marketing research are playing increasingly prominent roles. When applied to improve the substantive quality of the shows, broadcasters generally agree that marketing and research have made a positive contribution. Some of the leading marketing research and consulting firms serving television news are Frank N. Magid Associates of Marion, Iowa, Fairfax based company McHugh & Hoffman Inc., and Detroit based Market Opinion Research.
