ABSTRACT
The article reports the Senate Commerce Committee's approval of a bill which will require automobile makers to increase gasoline mileage by 50 percent by 1980. The idea is based on the assumption that gasoline is the only thing worth economizing. Mileage could be improved by abolishing automatic transmissions, power steering and air conditioning. Emission control devices reduced mileage by about 12 percent.
