The article presents information on an event that would take place at the University of Surrey, Guildford, England. The event will bring together researchers investigating aspects of so-called chatterbots, computer systems and languages designed to interact with people in a convincingly human way. Director of the University's Digital World Research Center Lynne Hamill said that in real life, performance has not moved on appreciably since 1966. Hamill said that problems lie in the sheer complexity of language, lack of understanding both of how it functions and how people learn it, and identifying why people actually want to interact. Existing programs, for instance the open-source language Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity, rely on pattern-matching techniques and pre-loaded vocabularies
