Silicon Labs unveils integrated single-chip phone for GSM/GPRS handsets

This article reports that Silicon Laboratories Inc. of Austin, Texas has introduced an integrated single-chip phone for GSM/GPRS mobile handsets. The company has recently introduced its AeroFONE single chip phone for the abovementioned handsets. According to Austin, its AeroFONE Si4905 is based on patent-pending power management unit, battery interface and charging circuitry, digital baseband, analog baseband and a quad-band RF transceiver into a single monolithic CMOS IC. Silicon claims that the Si4905 single-chip phone can reduce component count 75 percent, board area by 65 percent and manufacturing costs by up to 50 percent. The chip features an integrated digitally controlled crystal oscillator, which eliminates the external VC-TCXO modules used in other platforms. The chip also integrates 2 Mbits of on-chip SRAM, which the company says enables handset manufacturers to build OSM voice-centric cell phones without the need for external SRAM. Additionally, the platform integrates an ARM9-family-based MCU.
