ABSTRACT
The article presents information on a study of social identity in Russia, which is under various sociocultural conditions. The importance of cross-cultural and comparative studies of identity has been emphasized in relation to various communities in a certain geographic space and even in virtual space. An important role in the development of cross-cultural studies is played by the new set of problems that stem from the influence of the process of globalization on a person's social self-determination. This set of problems underlines the necessity of studying identity on both the local and the universal level. Such studies are especially timely today in Europe in connection with the formation of the European Union, and also in former socialist countries where a change in the social system is going on. In Russia, the timeliness of comparative studies of social identity is due to the country's isolation from the world community owing to ideological boundaries, and this had an impact on people's self-awareness.
