ABSTRACT
This article features several commercials in the U.S. as of May 31, 1999. Shot by documentary director Barbara Koppel, each TV spot created for Saint Thomas Health Services follows a guy identified only as Randy as he is diagnosed with a heart defect. Throughout several themes develop: the professionalism of physicians, the caring nature of the staff and the human element of uncertainty, fear and eventual relief. In the Dad's House commercial for Hallmark Cards, the subject of divorce is not exploited merely for effect; rather it employs the awkward connection between parents, mitigated by the fact that the mother bought a Christmas card for her son to give to his father.
