ABSTRACT
This article focuses on various advertising campaigns for the automobile industry in the U.S. as of May 31, 1999. The 30-second spots Drumstick and Dawg for car maker Volkswagen feature no car footage at all--just scenes of people psyching themselves up for Volkswagen automobiles, either by pretending to race through the gears using a chicken leg in a bowl of dip as a gearshift or just by hopping up on a chair to catch an imaginary car window breeze. The strategy behind the Manhood commercial developed by Deutsch for Mitsubishi is that one does not have to give up fun in becoming a grown-up.
