ABSTRACT
This article discusses the efforts of television network American Broadcasting Co. to sell advertising spots for its August, 1999 airing of the "Showdown in Sherwood" golf tournament, which features golfers Tiger Woods and David Duval. The spots, which are 30-seconds long, range from $130,000 to $150,000. Several advertising executives question the success of the golf tournament, saying that made-for-television sporting events have a poor track record and that the advertising spots were to expensive, reaching levels reserved for major sporting events, such as the U.S. Open.
