ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the advertising campaign launched by computer retailer Gateway Country in 1999. The campaign, worth somewhere between $2 million to $4 million, includes a giveaway of a Volkswagen Beetle was well as gift certificates and hats. Several financial analysts were initially skeptical about the company, which moved from direct selling to retail. That did not affect Gateway, which now operates about 161 stores in the metropolitan markets. Each store, while having no set inventory, feature showrooms that offer training services for its customers.
