ABSTRACT
The article presents information on developing general education curriculum for students with cognitive disabilities in the U.S. General curriculum consists of all the activities that comprise a typical school day. The major problem faced by educators is to ensure that students with significant cognitive disabilities actively participate and demonstrate progress in the general education classroom. Researchers suggest that general curriculum means that such students adhere to curricular standards, content, and materials that are similar to those of their classmates without disabilities. Teachers are further advised to provide them with additional supports and adaptations that they need to maximize their learning and participation. Research findings conclude that students with severe disabilities benefit academically when they approach the general curriculum. To support students with severe disabilities in general education settings, educators are suggested to identify classroom plans and conducting classroom observations.
