ABSTRACT
The article presents information about CD-ROM Expo 1993. Consumer-oriented databases dominated the expo. This is good news, as the large volume sales of mass market products will provide the incentives for developing better user interfaces and cheaper and more powerful hardware, which will benefit the players in the professional market. The Expo was a perfect showcase of what is to come. Parents will be happy to plunk down $30-40 dollars, not only for the awesome dinosaurs databases shown in abundance at the Expo, but also for the educational and recreational titles exhibited in large numbers. Small upstart companies will feel encouraged to come out with genuine design and content rather than derivatives and follow-ups of movie and TV blockbusters. There was a plethora of software for authoring CD-ROM titles, ranging from the inexpensive but disarmingly intuitive Easy CD from Pro CD Inc., to the most powerful and flexible CD Author from Dataware Technologies Inc., and the very popular Windows version of Personal Librarian.
