ABSTRACT
The article comments on Brazil's initiatives to free itself from foreign oil imports and be self-sufficient in its crude oil requirements. In 2005, 40% of all the fuel Brazilians pump into their vehicles is ethanol, derived primarily from sugarcane bagasse. The government requires that all fuel sold within the country contain at least 25% ethanol.
