This article presents a predictive Tasmanian survey of factors associated with reading failure. A survey in northern Tasmanian schools was conducted by the School Medical Service in 1965 to determine which factors might prove predictive of reading failure. Additionally, the study was to evaluate certain factors appearing to be associated with reading failure. In 1965, 1198 school entrants were examined. This number represents approximately 10 percent of the total number of school entrants examined by the School Medical Service in Tasmania. Hand, eye and foot laterality were assessed in each child included in this survey. In this Tasmanian survey, ambidextevity was a significant predictive factor in school failure. I a family history of right/left confusion or left-handedness had been included as a predictor, the accuracy of prediction would have been increased. The association of a positive family history lends some weight to the suggestion of a genetic basis in certain types of specific language disability.
