ABSTRACT
This article addresses the drawbacks of symposia books with a reference to "Minimal Cerebral Dysfunction in Children," edited by Stanley Waizer and Peter H. Wolff. It is argued that symposia books are often misleading, in that their titles more often than not are grandiosely general, while what's in them is narrow and specific. In the said book, some of the chapters are tightly focused research reports. In spite of this, however, the book manages to survey its target field rather decently. Some of the contributions, suggestively, are a lot less satisfying than others. For example, one of the most potentially interesting of papers--on the identification and diagnosis of children with learning disabilities by Helmer R. Myklebust--leaves out more than it says. Myklebust excuses himself, claiming that the rest of the material has been presented elsewhere. Such is the frustration of a symposium-based book. The said book is considered uneven in terms of its intended audience. Some contributions can, suggestively, be read and enjoyed by people of all degrees of training and clinical sophistication.
