ABSTRACT
This article informs that neurophysiological experiments have shown that the activity of individual binocular cells is inhibited when the acceptable parameters of disparity are not suitably matched on the equivalent receptive areas in each eye. Other occipital cells, or the same cells, may register a monocular impression but a true binocular effect is not achieved when super-imposition, retinal rivalry, or suppression occurs. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the incidence of visual defects and crossed laterality in a group of children suffering severe reading-handicap of a dyslexic nature, in comparison with a group of children free of reading Problems. The results have shown a heavy incidence of ocular defect in the reading disability group. This was not I unexpected, although all these children were declared "normal" in routine visual examinations. Convergence and/or stereoscopic defects were found in all but a single subject. Individual defects and weighted combinations of defects effectively segregated the selected groups studied.
