ABSTRACT
This article presents information on a clinical study according to which 700 to 800 IU/d of vitamin D reduces hip and nonvertebral fractures in older persons. The study explored whether oral vitamin D supplementation prevents hip and any nonvertebral fractures in older persons. Blinded randomized controlled trials of oral vitamin D supplementation alone or combined with calcium supplementation compared with placebo or calcium supplementation alone in participants ≥ 60 years of age, ≥ fracture occurred in each trial, and follow-up was ≥ 1 year.
