The article presents information related to P.L. 109-80, the Service members' Group Life Insurance Enhancement Act. This law permanently increases the maximum coverage available for Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans' Group Life Insurance from $250,000 to $400,000. The temporary increase was included in P.L. 109-13, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for the U.S. Department of Defense and the Global War on Terror. This law only allowed for the increase until September 30. The law also includes a provision affecting only SGLI that requires the Department of Defense to notify the servicemember's spouse in writing if the service member declines SGLI coverage or chooses an amount less than the maximum.
