ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the private branch exchange (PBX) partner strategy of Microsoft Corp. (MC). The capabilities of MC, combined with those of its partners, present a fully-featured Internet protocol (IP)-telephony and collaborative application suite. The major telephony equipment vendors who have not already integrated with MC will likely be encouraged by at least some of their customers to do so. Gradually, however, as the understanding grows of the value provided by a unified communications solution, this integration will begin to occur whether or not the vendor has a formal partnership with MC. But it is not yet clear whether MC will dominate the nascent market for presence-enabled collaborative applications that will ride over or enhance the IP-PBX.
