ABSTRACT

The article focuses on innovative programs in sex education in the U.S. schools. In the escalating war over sex education in the public schools, many combatants rush into battle without the fire power of facts. They fight to get sex education out of their schools or into them without knowing what the schools teach or plan to teach. All schools have always taught something about sex. No school can avoid giving its students what, by any name, amounts to sex education. In some states, schools now receive support and direction on sex education goals and curriculums from state-prepared guidelines. In some schools, sex education is given as a separate course and in only one or two grades. The newer programs usually present material in every grade, in a carefully designed sequence geared to children's mental, physical, emotional, and social development. Typical of this approach is the K-8 program in the District 65 schools in Evanston, Illinois.
