ABSTRACT
This article reports that in an unusually candid statement, C. Everett Koop, Surgeon General of the U.S. has urged schools and parents to be explicit in sex education with young people to avert a major health crisis over AIDS. Considered a moralist and a conservative, Koop described the silence that has grown up around AIDS and its method of transmission. Koop urged that education about AIDS begin in the earliest grade possible in elementary schools. Parents should be prepared to answer questions about sex and about AIDS at any age, he added, and they should bring up the subject themselves if a child has not asked questions by the age of 6 or 7.
