ABSTRACT
The article focuses on issues related to sex education in the U.S. Increasingly, schools in the country are making sex instruction part of science and health curriculums, starting in kindergarten with a continuing course on personal health and family living. Actual sex instruction usually comes in fifth or sixth grade and again in eighth or ninth. The question of who should teach it is touchy. Many principals instruct boys and school nurses instruct girls. Some schools depend on gymnasium teachers, guidance counselors, or classroom teachers to do the job. Schools not giving sex instruction invariably use the excuse that no one is qualified. Some principals are aghast when asked about giving sex instruction to boys and girls together. Yet many schools describe it as the only sensible way to proceed. There is general agreement that the home is the ideal place for sex instruction of young children. Among schools with active programs, the public and parochial posture toward sex instruction, which involves parents, is similar.
