ABSTRACT
The article informs that the continuing debate about the use of standardized achievement tests in schools in the U.S. led to an unusual conference of 25 national organizations, called by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Among the participants were representatives of American Association of School Administrators, the American Council on Education, National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and the National Education Association. Regarding achievement tests, the organizations said the profession must help develop new processes of assessment that are more fair and effective than those currently in use and that more adequately consider the diverse talents, abilities, and cultural backgrounds of children.
