The article profiles Jessica Avery, a correctional educator, who has been honored as the Region VII Teacher of the Year for 2005. Avery has been with the Department of Corrections in California for approximately 12 years, five of which were as a secretary for Plant Operations at Corcoran State Prison in Corcoran, California. Jessica was a member of the Vocational Curriculum Committee, Communication Committee, Technology Committee, as well as the Chairperson for 2003 and 2004 Trades Advisory Committee. She began her educational career at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, California in 1998 and was recently hired at California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility a State Prison at Corcoran, California. Avery earned her credential in Office Occupations and Computer Applications from Fresno State University. She has also taken several courses at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California. She also have been a contributor to the "Make a Wish Foundation" and "St. Jude's Research Center for Children" for the past 10 years.
