This article reports on crime and race relations in Cape Town, South Africa. Although the number of homicides declined by almost 6 percent in the last year, the body count was still staggering at 2,680. In Bantry Bay, a beach community just southwest of Cape Town, rape and drug crimes are on the rise. Locals have begun referring to the "Cape Times" as the "Cape Crimes" because of the number of stories about murders, assaults, and rapes. In Cape Town, gated communities occupied almost exclusively by whites are in extremely close proximity to small, run-down shacks inhabited by Xhosa tribespeople.
