ABSTRACT
The article reports that private college preparatory schools in the U.S. are experiencing a steady growth in enrolment and popularity. This trend, verified by the National Association of Independent Schools' latest member survey, became evident in 1968-69. That year, there was a 3.2 percent increase over the previous year's enrolment figures. Since then, increases have averaged 1.5 percent, with the largest--paradoxically--occurring in 1974-75, the height of the recession. Interestingly, many of these same schools faced severe financial and enrolment problems as recently as five years ago. They attribute the present enrolment turnaround to successful efforts in changing their image away from one of snobbism and nonfunctional tradition toward one of superior teaching in a more democratic, coeducational setting.
