This article reports on controversy over Turkey attempting to join the European Union. José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, supports the further enlargement of the Union. However, Turkey is receiving strong opposition from political leaders in Germany and France. Turkey's accession will be negotiated over a decade.
