Scyphers, John
September 2005
Virginia Numismatist;Fall2005, Vol. 41 Issue 4, p7
The article discusses case of James Murray Mason, a hard-working, devoted Southern statesman found on a 1862 $50 Virginia Treasury note. This common obsolete note is cataloged as "VTO3-06" in the Jones-Littlefield reference Virginia Obsolete Paper Money. Mason served in various public positions on state and federal level including terms in both the U.S. Senate and House. But it was Mason's appointment to an office in the Confederate government that propelled him onto the international scene.
