ABSTRACT
Reflects on U.S. President George W. Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court. Author's view that Miers's nontraditional background; Suggestion that, when presidents choose Supreme Court nominees who don't have much experience, the results tend to cluster at the extremes - either very good or very bad; View that trying to predict whether Miers will be a pragmatic centrist or a clerk-driven mediocrity is a difficult task for a confirmation hearing.
