ABSTRACT
This article reports on the decision of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) to withdraw its invitation to some advertising agencies in the U.S. to join its organization as of April 1999. At the annual meeting of the American Association of Advertising Agencies (Four A's), ANA President John Sarsen said that while agencies are no longer being asked to join, a consultant will be hired to build a bridge between the two trade organizations. Sarsen said that they decided to suspend their offer inviting agencies as members pending a study that the ANA and the Four A's will take on. Many agency executives did not want to comment publicly on the ANA decision. However, many privately expressed relief. Some agency officials were feeling client pressure to join, although even the ones who did not face that said the move was wise.
