The sera of 139 patients with persistent proteinuria from whom a renal biopsy had been obtained were examined for the presence of cryoglobulins. A cryoprecipitate was found in 2R of the 139 patients, and the cryoglobulins were identified in 19 of the 28 sera. IgG was always present in the cryoprecipitate, in six sera it was the only immunoglobulin, and in one it was associated with β1C-globulin. in 12 other patients the cryoglobulin was mixed IgG-IgM. Cryoglobulins were mostly found in patients having a glomerulonephritis characterized by a conspicuous and diffuse cellular proliferation such as occurs in acute glomerulonephritis, and cresecntic glomerulonephritis. Cryoglobulins were not found in a control group of patients not suffering from glomerulonephritis. Serial renal biopsies and repeated examination For cryoglobulins were performed in seven patients whose initial biopsy showed diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis. Persistence of cryoglobulinemia was accompanied by persistence of diffuse proliferation and, conversely, when the circulating cryoglobulins were no longer present, the proliferation had subsided. Whether circulating cryoglobulins can act as immune complexes to induce or aggravate a glomerulonephritis is discussed.

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether tissue-bound anti - basement membrane zone (BMZ) autoantibodies in patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) express a cross-reactive idiotype. We assayed 34 skin biopsies from 26 patients with BP and nine biopsies from control subjects,...

The association of a C3 splitting activity, known as C3 nephritic factor (C3NeF), with mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis (MCGN), especially MCGN type II, has long been known. Several forms of C3NeF are now recognised, the main one being an IgG which acts as an autoantibody binding to factor...

PURPOSE: To investigate the presence of anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB antibodies in the tear fluid and serum of patients with Sj''gren''s syndrome and to evaluate the association of these autoantibodies with the severity of keratoconjunctivitis sicca. METHODS: Tear fluid and serum were obtained...

Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) is a chronic acquired blistering disease with characteristic clinical, pathologic, and immunopathologic features. The disease is characterized immunopathologically by circulating and tissue-bound IgG class autoantibodies (EBA antibodies) to the basement...

Nephrophilic autoantibodies dominate the seroprofile in lupus, but their fine specificities remain ill defined. We constructed a multiplexed proteome microarray bearing about 30 antigens known to be expressed in the glomerular milieu and used it to study serum autoantibodies in lupus. Compared...

The article discusses immunological aspects of renal disease. Acute and later chronic serum sickness served as the prototypes of circulating immune complex glomerulonephritis in which antigen-antibody complexes immunologically unrelated to the glomerulus caused the disease. It is becoming...

Objective: To report definitive experimental animal evidence that antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCA) are pathogenic. Methodology: Myeloperoxidase (MPO) knockout (Mpo[sup-1-]) mice were immunized with mouse MPO, Splenocytes from these mice or from control mice were injected IV into...

Anti-double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) antibodies have been indicated to play a major role in the pathogenesis of lupus nephritis (LN), which is characterized by mesangial alterations, including phenotypic changes. Background. Several investigators have found that Chlamydia pneumoniae and cytomegalovirus infections may be risk factors for coronary heart disease. However, the data remain controversial. To address this hypothesis, data and specimens were collected from a well-established prospective cohort...
