ABSTRACT
The article discusses pathologic processes in the nephritis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The deposition of immune complexes in the glomeruli in SLE disease and the subsequent injury that ensues bear a resemblance to the nephritis in the experimental serum sickness animal models. Morphologic data obtained from immunofluorescence studies of renal biopsies from a broad group of SLE patients suggest that different immune complexes are involved in the nephritic process. The article thus helps to delineate the heterogeneity of the immune complex systems.
