The article evaluates a rapid method of preparation of kidney biopsies for electron microscopy. The rapid method was applied to 22 kidney biopsies obtained in vivo with a Vim disposable biopsy needle from patients with a wide range of kidney disease. The rapid method was successfully used in the 22 kidney biopsies that were examined. No polymerization damage was observed. A storage period did not reduce the cutting qualities of the blocks. The method gave satisfactory results in a wide spectrum of kidney diseases.

Context.—Thin glomerular basement membrane (GBM) nephropathy is often equated with benign familial hematuria, although it may occur sporadically and may not always be benign. Thin GBM nephropathy is reported to occur in at least 1% of the population, although its reported incidence varies...

Histology findings in idiopathic membranous nephropathy (MGN) have been associated with the risk of renal failure, but whether they are independent of the clinical variables at the time of biopsy, predict rate of progression, or should guide therapy is uncertain. X-ray-induced grafting of acrylic acid to poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) increases the resist sensitivity by at least three orders of magnitude. Scanning electron microscopy of grafted PMMA revealed micron and submicron features for dose levels as small as 0.1-1 mJ/cm2, thus demonstrating the...
