ABSTRACT
This article comments on John Waclawsky's study "IMS 101: What You Need to Know," published in the June 2005 issue of the periodical "Business Communications Review". Waclawsky offered a rather pessimistic assessment of the value, progress and likely success of the development of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), a standards-based service delivery platform at the heart of converged, multimedia next-generation networks. The reality of IMS is more optimistic, if customers are any indication. Collaboration between the various interested parties on the establishment and embellishment of the IMS standard is unprecedented when compared with earlier standards-setting efforts. According to the author, there is every reason to believe that the level of interoperability and compatibility between various equipment vendors' and operators' systems will be greater than ever before as a result of this successful collaboration.
