ABSTRACT
This article details the evolving role of the softswitch. Since the introduction of carrier packet-based voice networks and the separation of call control from media switching equipment, the softswitch has evolved in step with broader developments in networking. The softswitch performs the key call control functions in the packet-voice networks of the future. However, because there is no standard definition of "softswitch," implementations vary in scope and modularity. Class 5 subscriber access solutions are rapidly gaining traction. As products and networks progress toward the Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem architecture, the softswitch may have an expanded role in facilitating convergence of today's fixed and wireless networks, as well as in delivering tomorrow's multimedia services.
