ABSTRACT
This article introduces the articles contained in the September 2005 issue of the periodical "Business Communications Review". The author discussed the key themes that are shaping the next generation networks. Some of the arguments are anything but new. For example, the question of how best to provision a network for real-time time communications. Author Dave Passmore assessed Cisco's Application-Oriented Networking (AON) program. There still is considerable debate about how to allocate intelligence between edge/end devices versus within the network core. Author Peter Sevcik noted that in embracing open standards, enterprises have lost control and visibility into the user-application connection.
