ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the role of pretend play in developing learning skills among children. Good, old-fashioned pretend play-- with an empty box or simple rag doll--provides something very important to later growth and development. There is a growing body of research that shows a link between play and the development of cognitive and social skills that are prerequisites for learning more complex concepts. Play is linked to growth in memory, self-regulation, oral language, and symbol recognition. Play has also been linked to increased literacy skills and academic capabilities in other areas.
