ABSTRACT
This article presents three case studies involving solid waste managers in the U.S. who find ingenious ways to extend the life and improve the performance of their existing material recovery facility. Changes to the Rockland County, New York-based Solid Waste Management Authority's MRF include the removal of all of the conveyor belts used for sorting glass, addition of a stationary compactor for trash and upgrade to the electrical and fire-sprinkler services. On the other hand, the 27th Avenue Solid Waste Transfer Station in Phoenix, Arizona, has used Emery, an aggregate mixture of corundum and magnetite which has a high iron-oxide content, in covering its floor. On its part, California-based refuse collection and recycling firm Athens Services has used No Scent Odor Neutralizer #10410 to control odor at its MRF.
