ABSTRACT
This article reports that the grand opening of 7-Eleven Inc.'s first store in New York City since 1982 drew a large crowd of company executives, local officials and customers. People gathered to sample free Slurpees and doughnuts; watch 7-Eleven's presentation of an $8,000 scholarship to local Baruch College; enjoy the 7-foot, 11-inch sandwich that executives cut in place of a ribbon; and admire the fortitude of a man dressed in a Slurpee costume in 90-degree heat. Consumers who expect a duplicate of the company's suburban stores will be surprised: With a focus on fresh foods, this 1,495-square-foot 7-Eleven with 1,497 SKUs will have a very different product mix than the traditional store and will look very different than it did the last time it operated in New York.
