This article discusses a plan by Texaco add another attraction to its Web site which will allow direct online buying of the company's stocks in 1999. Texaco will install a piece of software in the site which will permit the 0company to take money directly from people's bank account in order for them to purchase stock. Although direct stock sales and dividend reinvestment programs were conducted through mail, the online resource itself has been an important customer relations and marketing tool. Texaco will require customers to submit bank account information and not credit card numbers because the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission does not allow investors to pay for stock with credit cards.
