ABSTRACT
The article presents information on certain recently published books on international relations that particularly emphasizes on Western Europe. George Liska in his book "Europe Ascendant: The International Politics of Unification," establishes some general conclusions about the conditions of European Unification and its possible forms. The result is an interesting and suggestive book that gives higher marks to France President Charles de Gaulle than most American treatments of the subject. Europe's relations with the United States, the U.S.S.R. and the underdeveloped countries are prominent elements in the analysis and the speculation. "Communism and the French Intellectuals: 1914-1960," by David Caute, is the most detailed and judicious study of the relations of Western intellectuals to Communism yet written. The author, a young English historian, sets the story in the broadest context and even tries to assess what happened to the work of individual intellectuals because of their adherence to Communism.
