The article discusses premarital sex among young people in Langjun district in Yingcheng county in China. In June 1986 the author conducted an investigation into premarital sex among young people in Langjun District, Yingcheng County, Hubei. Taking into account the secrecy and sensitivity of this problem and the mental frame of young people in the rural areas at present, he adopted an indirect survey approach. By dividing those investigated into three groups unmarried youth, married young and middle-aged people, and old people (over 50) in the ratio of 1:1:0.5 he made a random sample survey of 250 persons. The subject of the survey was the present state of premarital sex among rural youth. The question was asked whether a large number of young people had sexual relations before marriage in the past few years, and if yes what is the percentage. The results show that there are vast differences in the estimations of the three groups with regard to this question. The estimation of the old people is higher than that of the married young and middle-aged people, and that of the unmarried youth group is the lowest. There is less disparity in the estimations of the latter two groups.
