ABSTRACT
This article presents information on improving the COPD care. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide and causes over 30,000 deaths a year in Great Britain. Whereas COPD was considered to have few therapeutic options previously, it is now considered treatable because there has been increasing evidence supporting both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Compared with salmeterol twice daily, tiotropium once daily provides superior bronchodilation for 24 hours. Steroids reduce exacerbations in patients with a FEV1 of less than 50 per cent predicted and a history of two or more exacerbations in the preceding year.
