ABSTRACT
This article reports that the most companies have clear policies and written standards defining what is and what is not ethical conduct, and yet conduct is often permitted that is inconsistent with defined standards, if not illegal. For many people, the pressure that leads to compromising standards is the need to follow the boss's directions. The impact of ethical violations goes well beyond lost careers, jail time, lost jobs, and decimated stock portfolios. Legal penalties imposed on officers found guilty of illegal practices are not enough. People bear some responsibility to protect and reinforce the foundation of the free enterprise system, the concept of good faith and fair dealings.
