Implantable medical devices must have long lives

This article focuses on the use of ultra-low-power embedded radios that monitor and regulate the heart while communicating a patient's diagnostics. Communication with an implanted medical device is often done through magnetic coupling methods. Radio frequency technology offers a faster data transfer rate and longer link range. The physician can extract information quickly, and the patient benefits greatly from the expanded freedom of movement. Minimal power consumption is a mandatory requirement for a long-term implanted device with a desired functional life of seven to 10 years. Power consumption not only determines the life of the implant, it also figures in the size of the battery, often the largest component in an application where the absolute minimum size possible is critical.
